The Newstead 'lorica segmentata'

M.C. Bishop

This page provides links to animations, 3D files, and patterns of the new reconstruction of the Newstead cuirass described in the paper. Most browsers should be able to handle the MPEG and AVI files without any help, but you will either need a plugin for your browser, or a suitable graphics program, in order to examine the Web3D (VRML 2/97) file. Note that the shoulderguards are sitting a little high and the curious bar floating underneath the cuirass is a 10cm scale.

This is a small MPEG file but rather rough and jerky in quality

76Kb

This is a small-format AVI file and fairly smooth

0.7Mb

This is the larger AVI file, and like its smaller brother, is also quite smooth

3.0Mb

This is a Web3D (VRML 2/97) file which you can rotate, zoom, and explore interactively

0.6Mb

Should you feel that you need to download idealized patterns for this new reconstruction, these are also available here. When I can find a decent DXF filter that does not produce rubbish, I will place a .dxf file here too. I make no guarantee that these will work, so - as always with any form of reconstruction - it pays to make numerous dummy versions from cardboard before moving onto something more permanent. Don't blame me if it all goes horribly wrong...

This is a PDF that should be readable with the Adobe Acrobat Reader (as well as various graphics programs). It is full size (i.e. 1:1) so will probably need to be printed out in sections (how you achieve this will depend upon your software and your printer driver)

86Kb

This is a TIFF file (and should be readable by any bitmap editor or 'paint' program), also full size, at a resolution of 300 dpi, so it too will have to be printed out in sections

289Kb

This is a Corel Draw 7 (.cdr) file also at full size, but very small by comparison with all the other graphic forms.

52Kb

This is a Drawing Exchange Format (.dxf) file which, since it is nearly 1Mb in size, has been zipped. It is not as good as the .cdr file, but it will do.
